Can You Paint Your House In The Winter?

By Zuck Painting

Wintertime in New England can be harsh, however, you don’t have to bring all of your painting projects to a screeching halt. Nowadays, with modern paint technology, we are capable of painting with temperatures as low as 35 degrees Fahrenheit.

On the other hand, staining projects such as siding, decks, and patios require warmer temperatures so that the wood can fully absorb the stain, so get your exterior painting done in the fall/winter and save your interior painting projects for the dead of winter.

Exterior Painting In The Winter

Can I Paint The Exterior Of My House In The Dead Of Winter?

In New England, the short answer is no. Of course, this depends on where you live because Northern New England gets colder faster than Southern New England. However, a good rule of thumb to follow is when the temperature during the day or night reaches below 35 degrees, it is generally not a good idea to paint the exterior of your home.

For guaranteed good results, we recommend that you get your exterior painting done by the end of November. Also, make sure to leave ample time for exterior paint to dry if the temperature is under 50 degrees. Check your local weekly weather report to make sure that there is at least a week of rain-free or above 35-degree weather for optimal drying time.

Will Painting My House Protect It?

Yes! As we said before, New England winters can be harsh. What’s better than getting a fresh coat of protective paint right before the winter? Nothing! Not only does paint make your house look great, but it also acts as a shield against the elements of nature.

The barrier that paint creates keeps water and moisture out of the wood underneath, extending the life of your wood siding. Here’s what we recommend, take a walk around the outside of your home. If you see any areas where there is peeling paint or bare wood, give us a call at (508) 250-7272 to schedule a free estimate in MA or RI and we will send someone over immediately to come to take a look at it for you.

Interior Painting In The Winter

Ahhh, Winter! AKA Interior Painting Season

Homeowners, there are so many great reasons to save your interior painting projects for the wintertime, we promise you won’t regret it, and here’s why:

Winter Air Is Better For Interior Painting

During the wintertime, there is generally less humidity in the air, which is a good thing. Humidity hinders the paint’s ability to dry properly. By painting the interior of your home in the summer you risk the chance of humidity to negatively affect the drying process of the paint on your walls. Dry winter air allows the paint on your walls to dry and adhere correctly. Below, is a picture of what can happen to paint if there is too much humidity in the air during the drying process.

Also, don’t forget to turn up the heat to at least 50-70 degrees in your home. Interior paint has different properties and characteristics than exterior paint so the drying conditions need to be precise in order for the final product to look its best.
